xterm and dbaccess

When I started looking at the FAQ, I thought surely this one would be in there. Wrong. Why don't the Informix isql tools work in an xterm? Setting term/TERM to vt100 is a possible poor workaround, but I heard from a friend, that this problem was known for at least 5 years now... We are running on HP-UX 10.20, Informix 7.2.
