I suspect the answers to your questions may differ depending on the version of Informix you're using. I can speak for Online 5.01 only. >1) Is there any limit on the number of clients calling a single > procedure at the same time? The server process for each user caches stored procedures in memory. Thus, each user has a set of SPs in memory and memory becomes the limiting factor. (I believe in 7.x a common set of cached SPs is shared by all user threads.) >2) How the locking mechanism works for the system tables which have these > stored procedures? Don't know, but I assume it's no different than for any other table. >3) Can we expect performance improvement using SPs in the large client/server > environment? It depends. If you place frequently executed queries in stored procedures, you may experience some performance improvement due to the stored procedures being pre-optimized. Also, if you place groups of queries that manipulate large amounts of data into stored procedures, you may experience improvements because the data manipulation will occur entirely on the server thereby reducing network traffic. Of course, if your server is already running at full capacity, shifting this activity off of the client and onto the server may slow things down. Roger Tomas AG Communication Systems
