Hi poor old informix user, I'm very pleased to ear someone talking about this old SE 2.10 release. For my first professionnal experience I worked with SE 2.10.03k on a SCO Xenix box so I think I can advise you. First of all, think of year 2000 !!! You probably have to upgrade heavily your SCO and of course your DBMS must follow. We sold many Informix SE 2.10 and migrate them to 4.10 (in the last 80's) but now we install Online even for some 50 or 100 MB databases so your 1 GB database will work fine on both SE and Online. As you read postings here you have understood there's a big difference between them. SE manages the database as a collection of flat files (2 for each table plus the system's ones) and let Unix do the job. Online places all databases (and many other things) in a big flat file or in what's called a raw device (not even seen by Unix) and you have no choice but using Informix tools to manage it. With SE, as you already experience it every day, the management is a Unix job (backup and restore by tar or cpio, disk size adjustment by filesystem managing and manual log emptying). If possible, I would choose SE to minimize the learning time but Online to secure my data. Considering your 4gl sources, I can remember some troubles we encountered when upgrading from 1.10 to 4.10 (I've never really used features of 4gl 6x or 7x). Function calls: With 2.10 you can return from a function without taking care of the returning parameters - 4.10 don't say anything at compile time but stops at run-time: it wasn't easy to correct. Array management: Well, it's pretty old but I can remember that array bounds control has changed. With 2.10 you can use such a def: define XXX array[100] of .. and store data in XXX[101] without getting any error In 4.10, SEGMENTATION FAULT !!! In the same way, initializing a row in an array doesn't work any more if the structure of the row is too complicated (array of records of arrays OR records for example). You must do the job record by record and line by line. Hard to retrieve. have fun .. Hi! I just completed port of "ancient" Informix 4GL and SQL application to 7.24 on SCO OpenServer. 1. I understand 1.1/2.1 will not work on Openserver 5.0.5 because Xenix compatibility has been removed from the operating system. It works on 5.0.4. 2. I had problems with cursor names. They used to be 100% local to the 4gl source module. In 7.24 they still work as long as they are defined in exactly the same way between modules, otherwise last prepared counts and you have random runtime errors (this happened in RDS). Hi gurus! I've subscribed to this list some weeks ago and followed the postings with interest. At our company, we use an "ancient" informix software (it still works great!) on a SCO unix box. The engine seems to be some SE-version started by "isql v2.10", our application is developed with "i4gl v1.10/2.10", the application sourcecode is available. Our 12 users, which work with the compiled application, have got serial terminals and some windows-based pc's with telnet emulation. Since 1 year, it is my job to maintain the sourcecode and do some additional programming within our application. I want to migrate to an newer informix version, but I am not quiet sure to which product I should migrate and I only have a limited budget ... Online seems to be oversized to me, we have got "only" about 1 GB data - I'm thinking about SE version 7.x or something. But I've seen some other products called "Workgroupserver" and "Informix Dynamic Server", but I'm not quiet sure what differences exist between Workgroupserver/Dynamic Server/SE. Can someone bring some light in? Furthermore, when I migrate to i4gl v7.x, do I have to make some major changes to the 4gl-sourcecode? any help would be appreciated best regards rick -- snail: ANZER GmbH - Pieperstr. 14 - 32791 Lage - Germany email: rick_@t-online.de voice: (0049) 5232 / 9777-21 fax: (0049) 5232 / 78094
