Bufferpool max size in Windows Server 2008 64bit

Hi,
I am installing Informix 11.70 for a DW. On my Windows Server 2008 (64bit) I
have 64GB memory and I am trying to take advantage of it.
I have set the following bufferpool sizes and restarted the engine, but my
parameters are not respected and the actual values are much lower.
Is there some max size for the bufferpools?
If not, is there any downside to specifying very large bufferpools?
Thanks,
Lauri Pietarinen

Are there any messages about the buffer pool or memory allocation in the
message log when you start up the instance?

Hello.
It seems you are changing some different onconfig file.
Could you post your complete version number?
"onstat -" output?
(In case you are running some limited one, you might be hitting memory limits).
Look for environment variables, for ONCONFIG. If there is one value for this,
you must change that one, not the one you mentioned, in order to Informix
recognize it.
There is no soft limit for BUFFERPOOLs, only physical ones.
Regards.

Hi,
I restarted engine once more and now it looks right. So, probable user error!
Are there other memory parameters that would benefit from very large
values?
Thanks,
Lauri

Hi Lauri,
You may also want to check what size your resident memory segment is.
With 16GB ram on windows server 2008 r2 (I was only using informix growth
edition so may have behaved differently or had a different initial
configuration) I found the resident segment was initially limited to the
difference between the starting address and the address where system dll's
loaded - usually around 2 or 3 GB, the rest of the buffers all got assigned to
multiple virtual segments (onstat -g seg).
System dll's are at around 4GB and oninit.exe loaded around 5GB. So, if you
are getting a large number of virtual segments try setting the base address
above all this (SHMBASE 0x141460000L) and potentially exclude the system and
oninit memory spaces (SHMNOACCESS
0x7707FFFF-0x77800000,0x140000000-0x141480000).
But this may not be an issue for you, posted this here in case someone else
searches on a similar problem :-)

Bryce Stenberg.
