Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Philip Ness asked for the major differences between IDS 7.23 and 9.21 for an evaluation. Obnoxio The Clown noted both are out of support. Richard Snoke said the biggest change is that 9.x adds object features such as user-defined types and inheritance, and pointed to the release notes. Art Kagel advised comparing current releases, 7.31 and 10.00, instead.

As part of a evaluation project I need to find out the major differences
between release 7.23 and 9.21 of IDS.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

More important than their differences are the one key thing they have in
common: they are both well out of support.
Your evaluation project is comparing dinosaurs to dodoes.

Aside from the already mentioned inability to get fixes for whatever
problems you may encounter, the biggest change is that IDS 9.x introduces
objects into the DBMS. In IDS 7.2x you are limited to the data types that
come with the DBMS. In IDS 9.x and later (IDS 10.00 being the current
release), you can define your own types and methods, including single
inheritance and polymorphism. However, there are numerous other changes
as well. All those are listed in the release notes, and those may be
found at
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/notes/relnotes/server
s.html#ids9.
If you have further questions after reading the release notes, please ask.
Cheers,
Dick Snoke

You should AT LEAST be comparing the current releases: 7.31 to 10.00 since
there
have been several feature and performance improvements between 7.23 and 7.31
and between 9.21 and 10.00 (10.50 is around the corner).
