CASE expression in 7.2

According to the Informix FAQ at http://www.iiug.org/techinfo/faq/ifaq01.htm#1.8 support for the CASE expression was introduced in server version 7.3. I am stuck using Workgroup Server 7.20.UC2 (and I've verified by experiment that CASE doesn't work here). Is anything similar to CASE available to me?
