help with dbimport

I need to suggestions with dbimport.
Environment:
IBM RS6000 Model 360
AIX 3.2.4
Informix V3.2 (?) I don't know for sure.
I have been having a real hard time loading a database from tape. This
database was shipped from another site. I have managed to get the data
read from the tape into a file. Each time I do the dbimport, I get a
tape read error. I have even gotten this with a new tape I created when
I finally got the read in from the other tape using dd. That only took
about 30 tries. This is the command I am using:
% dbimport cl_default -c -q -t /dev/rmt0.1 -b 16 -s 500000 -f clschema
Is there a way I can load this database from the file I took from the
tape? If I can load it from the disk file, at least that would end the
fun of trying to read from the tape. Any ideas? I do not have manuals
here. This is for a library automation project. I was given the tapes
to get them loaded on the system. Not any great luck so far. Thanks.
