The only way I know to *really* know is to do it. Periodically.
We try to perform an archive and restore at least once to ensure that
the procedure is both viable and well-documented. I like to have
someone who is not familiar with the system try it (under close
supervision!) so that together we can develop answers--in advance--to
the questions that will arise.
The OL v7 engine provides a couple of radically different archive
mechanisms: ontape and ON-Archive. They warrant a two-day course
from Informix and their own manual ("Informix-OnLine Dynamic Server
Archive and Backup Guide Version 7.1", December 1994, part number
000-7627). Still, the short answer is that ON-Archive has an optional
cyclic-redundancy-check field (a type of check-sum) which provides
some assurance that the save set is not corrupt. I would not bet my
job on just the CRC, though.
Test it, try it, verify it. :)
