My solution is to implement a view lock manager, running on the same machine as the database engine, which handles locks on various records (or range of key values). The locks don't prevent any updates, but they do result in notification of those processes holding the locks so they can refresh their screen. In a distributed database environment, it can get messy handling routing to the appropriate manager. It was all done with TCP and Unix domain sockets.
