onbar -r -w -p erroring out
Posted in 2003
Topics: Backup & Restore
Hi,
I'm executing onbar -r -w -p, I recieve the following messages in my
bar_activity log.
ERROR: Unable to write restore data to the database server: could not fork
server connection.
and also,
ERROR: Unable to write restore data to the database server: not enough memory.
Please if anyone has seen this type of error or has some knowledge on this, do
help.
Thanks,
Kiran.
Hi,
I assume you are doing a cold restore, i.e. the server is not
running at the time ...
(Otherwise I guess that this is your problem: you can't do
a cold restore while the server is up.)
While the error messages may not be very descriptive of
the problem cause, it means that there is a shortage of
resources. In this case it points quite clearly to a memory
shortage.
On-Bar requires the creation of certain SHM segments that
are used to communicate with the IDS server that will be
started during the restore process. Additional SHM segments
are created and used to transport the archive data from the
Storage Manager to the IDS server (which then writes the data
to disks).
The error message suggests that there is not enough memory
available to processes for these operations.
Reasons for this shortage can be various, like not enough
physical memory, not enough swap space, kernel parameters
not big enough to let processes create/attach to SHM segments
of the size or in the number required.
To find out more, check the online message log file (e.g. if the
IDS server is started at all or the failure occurs before the
IDS server is started).
If nothing else helps, you can try to trace system calls of "onbar_d"
(started via "onbar") and the children it forks off during the
process. Use a system utility like "truss" or "strace" (name and
availability depends on your platform). Though I don't think you'll
have to go that far.
TIA,
Martin
