Re: Why should I upgrade my 7.31 instance to 9.4 or 10.0

Hi DL, Are you guys going to expect some security enhancement as a result of Sox/PCI or some other regulatory compliance requirements? If So, both 9.40 and 10 give you simple password encryption, and encryption over the wire. Oh, also don't forget that if you are on HP and want to enable shadow passwords, you need to move to 10.00 A lot of Performance improvements, as well multi-threaded index cleaning/management. The latest PID release of 10 even has a fully working ALICE mode, which on index heavy OLTP instances has a tremendous impact. (I have a customer that, being able to use ALICE mode, has dropped some of their batch purge runs from 28 hours to under 12 Hours.) Better buffer management is definitely true. Multiple page sizes, so that if you have a table built that is say 4K in width, you can use 16K pages (10.00 and greater) SQL Statement Cache, as of 10.00.FC6W3, sill gain you additional performance. Archiving and Table Level restores have also made huge improvements since 7.31.UC4 Anyway, those are a few of the many things that an upgrade to 10 will get you. -Mark ----- Original Message ---- From: DL Redden <redden96@yahoo.com> To: Informix List <informix-list@iiug.org> Sent: Thursday, August 9, 2007 4:00:51 PM Subject: Why should I upgrade my 7.31 instance to 9.4 or 10.0 We have a PeopleSoft 7.52 installation still running on IDS 7.31.UC4. I want to upgrade/migrate the database to a newer version of Informix, probably 9.40.FC7 or 10.0.FC6. The version will be dictated by the PS 8.48 or 8.49 tools that we install. I'm looking for reasons that would help me sell this idea to my upper management. I can think of a few reasons that make me want to make to move, such as: longer object names (The 18 character limit is a thorn in my side), better buffer management (I think, someone please confirm this), IDS 7.31 is reportedly EOS in April of 2009 Quite honestly I'm having a hard time coming up with a good list of reasons since we've been running in this configuration for 7 or more years and it just runs. You have to love Informix for this trate but right now I just wish it'd break so that I'd have a good reason to get it upgraded. Can anyone help me out in making a case? P.S. On the flip side if anyone has any reasons not to perform this upgrade chime in on that as well. DL
