Database versioning with IDS 11.50

Good morning, Maybe I'm asking a question that has an answer bigger than I realize, but I would like to ask about any database / table versioning with IDS 11.50. Is anyone doing that? My goal is to have a particular version of any given able at a point-in-time. Currently, I unload hundreds of gigabytes to ASCII file on disk on a nightly basis so that we have a "backup" copy of a table for a particular day. I'm hoping database versioning will eliminate the need for me to unload all my tables to ASCII file. We also use EMC Networker for disaster recovery backups of my Informix 11.50 database, but my experience is that isn't practical to use to restore selected rows with in a specific table. Thanks for any insight or suggestions. Sincerely, Jonathan B. Jonathan, what do you mean by Database Versioning? Do you mean a history of the schema or the ability to access any historical value of a row going back in time? Art Art S. Correct... Maybe a better term is auditing, but without the use of table triggers. Jonathan B. OK, so you don't need live SQL level historical access to your data in the main database, just to ability to see what changed, from what to what, when, and by whom. That is auditing. Informix has two different audit facilities (besides triggers): - Trusted Audit Facility - Full auditing. You can filter the kinds of transactions and IB by user what is audited. Using this feature entails significant overhead and impacts server and system performance depending on how much of the server's activity is audited. The more that's filtered out the lower the overhead. - Change Data Capture - Like CDC on other servers, this provides an API that allows you to write applications that capture logical log records in transit and reprocess them to build an audit facility, change logging facility, or your own data replication facility. The overhead is low - about the same as turning Enterprise Replication on. There are already IBM and third party systems that can interface with Informix CDC and others in development (at least one other is close to release). Art Art S.
