Paranoid organisations have someone watching, waiting for something bad to happen. Other organisations have people on call when something bad happens. Still others say that downtime can only happen at certain points, and all DBA hands must be available then, their own lives be damned. We're embedding Informix into 7x24 telephony applications. I haven't been called for an Informix problem on a customer site in two years (there have been application issues, but not Informix issues). That doesn't mean I've avoided overtime; that's gone into developing the tools and wrappers we need so our customers don't screw up their databases and have to call us, and in tuning the database, the OS, and the application so our real-time constraints can be met. -- W.
