Upgrade to 11.7 from 11.5 -- Performance improveme
Posted in 2013
Someone asked whether moving from IDS 11.50 to 11.70 would deliver a 5–15% performance gain, and whether any regressions were likely. Replies: expect roughly that gain overall (some queries better, some worse), with the biggest wins if you exploit 11.70 features such as forest-of-trees indexes, multi-index scans, external tables, non-indexed FK constraints and DW optimizations. Main caveat: the new automatic read-ahead was buggy in early fixpacks, so go to 11.70.xC7 or later. Advice was to benchmark your key queries; no single formal resolution.

Hello, We're thinking about upgrading to 11.7 from 11.5, this is just a sub-version upgrade but should we still expect some where in the neighborhood of 5 to 15% performance improvement? Are there any positive stories you would like to share please? Are there any cases where performance drop? Thanks in advance. Kern --
One thing to be careful of is the automatic read ahead ... that had some issues in the .XC3 release. Those issues are fixed I believe in .FC5 and beyond... Readahead was supposed to be fixed in .xC4 but it's not right until .xC7 or later. Art Art S. Make sure you go to 11.70.xC7 or later. In general 5-15% performance gain is about right with individual queries performing a bit better than that and some a bit worse than under 11.50. YMMV applies. If you can start taking advantage of 11.70 features like FOT indexes, multi-index scans, and DW optimizations you will get the biggest improvement overall when your access patterns can take advantage of these. Wow, thank you Art and Peter for this negative story, and this is good to be aware of. Are there any possitive stories with this upgrade that I can use to sell it to the customer to why they should upgrade (I'm talking about just performance alone, for example, no story about storage provisioning, etc). Thank you. ________________________________ From: Art Kagel <art.kagel@gmail.com> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Tuesday, April 16, 2013 3:59 PM Subject: Re: Upgrade to 11.7 from 11.5 -- Performance i.... I posted the positives first. And the new AUTO_READAHEAD is working out fine now that it's fixed. Art Art S. Hi Kern, from facts mentioned here: http://ibmdatamag.com/2011/01/informix-hands-on-first-look-11-7/?doing_wp_cron=1 366179919.4952280521392822265625 my customers have positive experience with - external tables - forest of tree indexes - multiple indexes scanned in one join - FK constraints w/o the need to use an index As always YMMV, so I'd do some testing of the most inportant queries or queries most used - especially if those are 'fast enough' now in V11.50. dic_k ---- Kern Doe <kern_doe@yahoo.com> schrieb: > Wow, thank you Art and Peter for this negative story, and this is good to be > aware of.
