Check semaphore parameters and up each one to at least 1000.
Check shared memory parameters and up them to that you can have 100
segments of up to 500Mb each.
I have seen a Compaw machine 'freeze' when creating sysmaster due to
the massive amount of I/O happening. I would leave it for ~10 minutes
and see what happens.
reboot, rsck and see what is in online.log
