Your only problem when trying to search for the 9th character, is enclosing
your $var in quotes. The following works:
define
variable search_pattern char(50)
end
input
prompt for search_pattern using "Enter search pattern: "
end
select description
from species
where description[9,9] = $search_pattern
end
format every row end
Actually, Informix Tech Support is not 100% correct. We use matches with a
user input all the time in ace, we just have the user enter an actual search
pattern - stars and all. But in this case your search will be more efficient
without the matches anyway.
