IDS, BTS datablade and HDR
Posted in 2009
The poster asked whether installing the Basic Text Search (BTS) DataBlade would block HDR for an entire IDS instance, since the docs say BTS doesn't support HDR. Answers from IBM staff and others: BTS doesn't prevent HDR of the rest of the instance; in older versions the BTS index lived in an extspace (a filesystem) so it simply wasn't replicated/available on the secondary. From 11.50.xC3 onward BTS indexes can be created in an sbspace (smart blob space), so they replicate and work with high-availability clusters; see the release notes/infocenter docs on managing sbspaces.

In the BTS requirements section it states that HDR is not supported. I understand the explanation about why the BTS cannot be replicated, it writes the indexes to file, but what is not clear is if the addition of the BTS datablade will *prevent* HDR. http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v111/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.d bext.doc/dbext228.htm That's my question. If I add the BTS datablade will that preclude me from HDR of the rest of the IDS instance?
1) - I'm pretty sure it won't prevent HDR (haven't actually tested that), but - 2) - if you're running 11.50.xC3 or greater, you can put the BTS index in an sbspace and it will replicate with HDR. what is an sbspace? Can you point me to some documentation?
I am not sure which version of the server you are using, but if you check the release notes of 11.50.xC3 or later you will find the following: Basic Text Search DataBlade=AE module Supports High-Availability Cluste= rs =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D You can now use the Basic Text Search DataBlade=AE module to perform searches on high-availability cluster servers by creating indexes in sbspaces. Previously, the Basic Text Search DataBlade module only supported the creation of indexes in extspaces, and thus could not participate in any queries on high-availability secondary servers and in backup and restore operations. In short the until this version BTS data was stored in a file system, n= ow it can be stored in a smart blob space and replicated to the secondary servers. If you use BTS before 11.50.xC3 then the BTS index would only= be availible on the primary (unless you got really tricky and exported= that file system to other server in the same location). John F. Smart Blob Spaces were first supported in 9.30 IB and as of 11.50 you can place BTS indexes in sbspaces. Art Art S. On IDS 11.50 the BTS indexes can be created in SmartBlob spaces. So in these later versions it is supported in HDR. On previous versions I believe you could use it, but the index would not be available on the secondary. But I don't know what happens if you try to use it... If moving to IDS 11.50 is not an option you should ask technical support to have an official answer. Regards.
