12.10FC8 to 12.10FC9
Posted in 2017
A newcomer asked how to upgrade IDS from 12.10.FC8 to 12.10.FC9. The consensus answer: it's a straightforward in-place fix-pack upgrade since the versions are binary compatible. Install the new release into a separate INFORMIXDIR, copy over ONCONFIG and sqlhosts (and compare onconfig.std for new parameters), shut down the instance, repoint the INFORMIXDIR symlink, verify with onmode -V, then start with oninit -vw and watch the online log. Afterwards drop and rebuild statistics/distributions. Others added that customised alarmprogram.sh, log_full.sh, hosts.equiv and any custom DataBlades should also be carried across. The poster thanked the respondents.

Hello Team, Appreciating HCL people, happy to hear the new release. Im new to Informix. Can anyone suggest how to upgrade from IDS 12.10FC8 to IDS 12.10FC9. What are the steps involved any documentation?
It just works But normally you would tweak INFORMIXDIR - in my test world FC8 and FC9 are binary compatible so switching binaries doesn't involve any extra steps - you can move between to two versions without any issues Cheers Paul Paul Watson Oninit www.oninit.com +1 913 387 7529 Oninit® is a Registered Trademark of Oninit LLC > On Aug 8, 2017, at 21:30, MUKESH TANUKU <mukeshbt1328@gmail.com> wrote: > > Hello Team, > Appreciating HCL people, happy to hear the new release. > > Im new to Informix. This is very easy. Install the new version on your machine, preferrably in
a new INFORMIXDIR (not overwriting the previous release). Copy your
ONCONFIG file and sqlhosts file to the new INFORMIXDIR/etc directory from
the old one. Optionally compare the two onconfig.std files to see if there
are any new parameters you want to add to you ONCONFIG file. That done
there are only three steps left:
1. Shutdown the 12.10.FC8 instance
2. Relink the symbolic link you are hopefully using as the contents of
the INFORMIXDIR environment variable from the 12.10.FC8 INFORMIXDIR to the
new 12.10.FC9 INFORMIXDIR.
3. Make sure that you seeing the new executables in your PATH rather
than the old ones by running "onmode -V" and see the version that's
displayed.
4. Start the engine using the new oninit with "oninit -vw"
That's it. Once the oninit returns your command line to you the engine will
be online. You can run onstat -m commands or tail -f the online log to
watch any data structure conversions the new version needs to do to
complete the upgrade. You are now online in the new release. The following
is recommended:
- In each database run "UPDATE STATISTICS LOW DROP DISTRIBUTIONS;" then
run the usual suite of update statistics commands (or just run my dostats
utility). This is to replace the data distributions created by the earlier
release because sometimes between releases the internal structure of the
distributions changes and causes performance problems if you don't do this.

Just to add to Art's already comprehensive post...when copying files from
the old $INFORMIXDIR/etc to the new $INFORMIXDIR/etc directory, also compare
the alarmprogram.sh and log_full.sh. Customizations may have been made to
these scripts in your current environment - to handle logical log backups,
and possibly other things.
