Man don't you feel ripped off that PG is selling Ass-n-tail for the same price he sold off Informix to IBM? Dont get me wrong, IBM isn't a bad home, however, man, We wuz robbed! Maybe now IBM realizes the bargin basement price they got for Informix? Can you imagine a segment on cash in the attic or antique road show, where Steve Mills comes in with the informix placard and says he bought it for a billion? Thats akin to finding a masterpiece of modern art at a garage sale for 15 dollars only for it to be worth 15,000. (You can switch to pounds, yen, sheckles ... you get the same idea.) I wonder if this means that PG is retiring? But hey, what do I know? ;-)

Actually, it appears IBM is paying more for Ardential than it did for Informix: $1.1 billion dollars. I hadn't realised there was that much inflation. If they just put the, say, $800M in the bank (or at least not loose it) then IBM gets it for $300M incremental over the original Informix purchase. At first glance it appears PG is selling the last 21% of Informix/Ardent to IBM for $0.1B more than he sold the prior 79% for. But it's not QUITE that bad: (1) According to Yahoo, ASCL has just north of $480M in cash. (2) ASCL bought one or more other companies with some other of the IFMX cash in the meanwhile. So for net $680M or so, IBM is getting the old 20% plus some delta. That still sounds like a better piece of salesmanship than was exercised before.
