Is it possible to turn an informix 12 developer edition into a workgroup edition?
Posted in 2024
Uwe Trefz asked whether Informix 12.10.FC16W1DE developer edition could be converted to a Workgroup Edition without reinstalling. Marcus Haarmann doubted it, and Art Kagel said 12.10 licenses cannot be upgraded. Art gave a procedure: install Workgroup in a new INFORMIXDIR, copy ONCONFIG, sqlhosts and alarmprogram changes, swap directories and restart. Uwe planned to try it.

Hello Guys,
I have an Informix developer edition database running here.
We have now bought an original Informix workgroup edition 12.10 license to get rid of the 8 GB disk space limitation of the developer edition.
Is it possible to convert the developer edition to a standard workgroup edition without reinstalling?
onstat is currently showing me this version.
It would be great if that were possible.
It would save me a lot of work.

Hi, I do not think this would be that easy. In the 12.10 editions, there was no separate license installer. This has changed in 14.10, where you can convert the editions by applying the correct license setup even over an installed version (basically, dev edition is installed always and is then branded to be WE, IE, Enterprise ..., but you can convert an IE to WE for example). Back in 12.10 times, everything was packed in the installer, which was different for each edition. You could try to install a WE (same sub-release/Patch level) over a DEV edition and see if the license changes. But I am not sure if the installer would overwrite an existing installation. The normal approach would be to install in a new folder, copy the config files/alarm script etc. and then restart with the new binaries. I believe they do not keep any license relevant information outside the INFORMIXDIR, so my approach to change the edition of a number of installations would be to make a "master" image, tar it together and unpack it on every machine. Then apply a shell script, which would shutdown the original engine, rename the original INFORMIXDIR, make a new symlink to the new INFORMIXDIR, copy config files from old installation and then start the engine in the new INFORMIXDIR. Can be automized possibly using mechanisms like ansible. Not really a recommended setup procedure, but might be faster depending how many machines you need to switch ... Always check you are licensed .... Maybe for some cases IE would be the better choice (e.g. on a test system which requires more parallel connections). Best, Marcus Haarmann
Uwe:
No, there is no way to upgrade the licenses in v12.10. However, this is not a big deal. Here is the procedure, which is simple and near zero risk:
Install the Workgroup Edition in a new INFORMIXDIR
Copy the ONCONFIG and sqlhosts files
Make any changes to the ONCONFIG parameters that you need to make (so probably just memory and # CPU VPs)
Shutdown the existing instance.
If you used a symbolic link for the INFORMIXDIR path, just delete that link and create it again pointing to the new installation. If not, then rename the old INFORMIXDIR to a temp name like informixdir.old, then rename the new installation directory to what INFORMIXDIR is set to.
Make sure that all paths are pointing to the correct INFORMIXDIR
Verify by running: oninit -V which should show the new version string. If all is well, then:
Start up the Workgroup oninit.
And you are back in business. You should not be offline for more than 3 minutes.

Oh, forgot, if you made any changes to the original $INFORMIXDIR/etc/alarmprogram.sh (usually to automate logical log backups) then either make the same changes to the new one or copy the old one to the new location. ------------------------------ Art S. Hello Gentlemen, many thanks for the tipps how to solve the issue. I think I will try it and see if it works. Kind Regards, Uwe ------------------------------ Uwe Trefz ------------------------------
