North Texas Informix Users Group: Next Meeting December 15, Los Colinas, TX
Posted in 1999
The long-awaited next meeting of the NTIUG has been scheduled for December
15, 1999. It is being held at the Los Colinas Country Club (address and
directions below) from 6pm to 9pm. There will be snacks and refreshments
available, as well as a cash bar for those who wish something stronger than
the Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper I usually drink. In order to be able to
supply Informix with a guess on how large a crowd to anticipate (for food
and drinks), please reply to this email and let me know how many people you
will be bringing with you that were not contacted via this email (just ask
them). If your department is thinking of upgrading in the near future to
II-2000, attending this meeting should be a requirement. :)
I am thrilled to announce that Informix (Irving) has secured the County Club
for this meeting as well as all of the meetings for next year. One of the
major headaches I have faced so far has been finding a location to have the
meetings that will hold from 40 - 80 people. Though the starting time for
this meeting is 6pm, all of the future meetings will be held from 7pm to
10pm. The dates are currently being confirmed and will be announced at the
meeting. By the next meeting (in March), I should be able to present the
agenda for all of the Year 2000 meetings.
The main speaker at this meeting will be Howard Zalkin. He will be
presenting a one-hour technical product overview of the II-2000 product and
the strategy of the product going forward. This speaker you do not want to
be late for; to assist you in that, he will not start his presentation until
6:35pm so that any late arrivals will be able to hear the entire
presentation.
Sadly, due to circumstances beyond my control, I have lost the other
speakers that were due to speak. Since quite a few of you asked for a
performance tuning workshop, I believe devoting the last hour of the meeting
to this matter will be well worth your time to attend. If you feel you are
having performance tuning problems, please bring a printout of your
$INFORMIXDIR/etc./$ONCONFIG file along with the output of an onstat -a
command. Please know the total RAM and the number of CPUs available on your
server. I, along with others that will "volunteer", should be able to offer
a few pointers to assist you in understanding your ONCONFIG. I will also
have some performance tuning handouts available for you to take back to your
office.
The agenda for this meeting, then, is as follows:
6:00 - 6:30: Informal Gatherings, Discussions, Getting Lost in
Traffic (!)
6:30 - 6:35: Welcome, Surveys Distributed
6:35 - 7:45: II-2000 Technical Presentation, Q&A
7:45 - 8:00: Break
8:00 - 8:55: Performance Tuning Workshop
8:55 - 9:00: Surveys Collected, Closing, Finding Directions

If you feel you know INFORMIX well enough to assist your fellow members in
performance tuning, please contact me by email so I can determine how many
"volunteers" we may need from OTHER sources :)

Be sure to take advantage of this offer before 30 December 1999 to get these
three computer-based training (CBT) courses absolutely free (a $375 value):
Relational Principles provides a sound appreciation of the relational model
and the principles on which it is based. This course satisfies the
Relational Database Design prerequisite for Informix classroom training
courses. (It can also assist you in preparing for one of the two
certification tests you need to become an Informix Certified Database
Specialist.)
SQL Programming: Database Queries demonstrates the use of SQL in data
retrieval.
SQL Programming: Data Handling Techniques demonstrates the use of SQL in
defining database structures and controlling data security. This course,
combined with the SQL Programming: Database Queries course above, meets the
Structured Query Language prerequisite for Informix classroom training
courses.
Once you complete these three Foundation Level CBTs, you will meet the
prerequisites for most Informix Level I training courses. Or, if you've
already worked with Informix databases, you can give the CBTs to a co-worker
or to your department's education manager.
Call 1 800 529 6999 right away and order your Informix Training Season Pass
for all the training you need in the year 2000. Don't forget that the free
CBT offer expires on December 30.
======
I am still looking for at least one volunteer to be able to take my place in
case I cannot attend a meeting due to either work or illness. If you are
interested, please let me know by replying to this message.
I look forward to seeing all of you soon.
Take care.
