Getting to the analysts and consultants
Posted in 2008
Not a technical problem thread — it's a discussion sparked by an IIUG newsletter piece claiming consultants steer customers away from Informix. A poster reported that at a customer site planning a data warehouse upgrade, the global consulting firm advising a move from IDS to Oracle because "Informix is legacy" turned out to be IBM Global Services itself. Serge Rielau (IBM Toronto lab) asked for details offline so it could be escalated internally; others argued IGS/sales politics make such escalation futile, and the thread degenerated into jokes and personal sniping. No resolution or outcome is recorded.

While this is an IGS issue, S&D does become a factor because of the role of the Client Rep. You have to understand that the issue is a tad more complex than Oracle vs IBM's IDS and that from Arvind's position, its a battle he will never win. No offense, you're in the Lab and you have little to no interaction with IGS/BCS and S&D on a regular basis. Trust me, its not the PWC guys who are the problem. (Actually the PWC partners that I've met were actually very good. IGS Public Sector? Not so nice.) Now here's the sad fact of life. If IGS is pushing Oracle, the SSR or Data specialist rep has no chance in hell of turning it around. Again, its the client rep who calls the shots. This is one of the many reasons why in SMB and white space, Informix is gaining ground. But hey! What do I know? Nothing like being cross matrixed to S&D and given the short end of a stick covered in shite! ;-) -Gumby _________________________________________________________________ Make distant family not so distant with Windows Vista® + Windows Live™. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/digitallife/keepintouch.mspx?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_CPC_VideoChat_distantfamily_012008

If it was me, I would have just used two. Well Mark, what can I say to such a busy Oracle executive that we should feel graced by his presence? Oh wait! I'm channeling Timmy now! Sorry about that... Serge walked in to that one. First, by the time you're hearing about this, the deal is done and gone and its too late to change anything. Second, there are so many ways that the client team can spin this, that there's no fear of repercussions from promoting Oracle over IDS. Hell son, I've seen S&D teams do far worse and walk away unscathed. Hey Serge, ask Danny A. about a trip he once took to Chicago... Hell we drank our dinner that night. I scored some BlackHawks tickets just hopping for a fight to break out on the ice. The point is if you're going to pick a fight, pick one that you can win. Having Mike A. chew out a DB2 staffer for slaming IDS is one thing. Its all within the pillar. Picking a fight with IGS and S&D is another. You're not going to win. Period, end of story. Unlike Serge, I've been there. Mutiple times. And have the scars to prove it. Gumby, I'm getting tired of being patronized by you. My request was to C. Pedantic, not you. He can choose to help change or not. For me to fail I first need the opportunity to do so. :-) Cheers Serge -- Serge Rielau DB2 Solutions Development IBM Toronto Lab
