Re: Informix to Oracle Migration
Posted in 2005
A poster asked for alternatives to QueriX's Hydra compiler (which they had licensing problems with) so they could compile Informix 4GL/ESQL-C code against an Oracle database as part of an Informix-to-Oracle migration. No one named an alternative tool. Instead the thread turned into advice against the migration at all — arguing Oracle's architecture (multiversion read consistency, locking behaviour) would require real recoding, not just recompiling — plus vendor-lock-in and cost jabs, a dispute over which product costs more, and quibbles about typos. No resolution is recorded.

Um - needs more people to tune it and keep it running, developers cost more, and it's expensive to buy? And that's on a new site. You're surely not suggesting that a port to Oracle., plus training, new staff and licencing costs is likely to cost less?
