Free Informix download for learning?
Posted in 2007
A user wanted a free Informix download to practise on Ubuntu at home. Replies pointed to IBM's developer download site and www.iiug.org (free registration required). After downloading IDS 9.4, the installserver script failed with "etc/brand: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file". Advice was that a symlink from the expected library name to the installed one fixes it. The poster solved it himself with: cd /usr/lib; sudo ln -s libstdc++.so.6.0.8 libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3. It was also asked why not use version 10.

Hi there, We use Informix at work and I'd like to install a version of it on my Ubuntu box at home so I can practise using it. Is there a free single- machine version of Informix that can be downloaded from IBM? I suppose I could always do bookwork at home and then practise at work, but it'd be helpful to have at home to: - learn how to administrate Informix (create users and dbs) - experiment with different queries, etc Many thanks Andrew

Thanks Neil. I've downloaded Informix 9.4 and run the installserver program but I get the following error: etc/brand: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++- libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory On checking Synaptic package manager I have the following libstdc++ packages: - libstdc++6 (4.1.1-13ubuntu5) - libstdc++6.4.1.dev (4.1.1-13ubuntu5) How do I go about installing libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3? My previous post wasn't that clear. I have the two libstdc++ packages installed: - libstdc++6 (4.1.1-13ubuntu5) - libstdc++6.4.1.dev (4.1.1-13ubuntu5) On Jun 30, 1:13 pm, Andrew2006 <mymate...@googlemail.com> wrote: > Thanks Neil. > > I've downloaded Informix 9.4 and run the installserver program but I > get the following error: > > etc/brand: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++- > libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or > directory > > On checking Synaptic package manager I have the following libstdc++ > packages: > - libstdc++6 (4.1.1-13ubuntu5) > - libstdc++6.4.1.dev (4.1.1-13ubuntu5) > > How do I go about installing libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3? > > Many thanks > > Andrew > > On Jun 30, 12:13 pm, "Neil Truby" <neil.tr...@ardenta.com> wrote: > > >http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/search.jsp?go=y&rs=ifxids > > > or > > >www.iiug.org > > > (Free) registration is required for either. > > -- > > Neil Truby t:01932 724027 > > Director m:07798 811708 > > Ardenta Limited e:neil.tr...@ardenta.com > > > "Andrew2006" <mymate...@googlemail.com> wrote in message > > >news:1183200433.607072.326280@w5g2000hsg.googlegroups.com... > > > > Hi there, > > > > We use Informix at work and I'd like to install a version of it on my > > > Ubuntu box at home so I can practise using it. Oh, it's on the tip of my tongue... I don't recall, it has something to do with setting up a link from what it is expecting to what you have. Sorry that's useless. But it is(was) a common occurence that a google of comp.databases.informix should resolve. www.iiug.org also has some archives with a search. You might also try the Informix Linux subgroup. That is available via the iug site again - mailing lists. Those archives should be searchable as well. Just out of curiosity, why 9.4? Version 10 is out there as well. j. -----Original Message----- From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org]On Behalf Of Andrew2006 Sent: Saturday, June 30, 2007 8:14 AM To: informix-list@iiug.org Subject: Re: Free Informix download for learning? Solved the problem, using the technique used on this webpage: http://www.granneman.com/techinfo/linux/installsoftware/installopenoffice642.htm Just symlinked my closest matching libstdc++ file to the one the installation program wanted. So: cd /usr/lib sudo ln -s libstdc++.so.6.0.8 libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 Hopefully the gap in version numbers (6.0.8 to 6.2.2) won't break anything but it's working at the moment :) Andrew On Jun 30, 3:35 pm, "Jack Parker" <jack.park...@verizon.net> wrote: > Oh, it's on the tip of my tongue...
