Hi,
Sorry I am sending the mail again because I found that the attachment
reached to you will not be in proper format.
I have installed informix 7.31 on MP-RAS 3.02 (NCR S 1600 machine, with 2GB
RAM) . But I am not initialize my informix instance using "oninit -i"
command if i use raw device. I tried using cooked file instead of raw and
it worked fine.

Karl, I got following error while writing into online_root. It means that the device is having some problem. UX:dd: ERROR: Write: No such device or address 1+0 records in 0+0 records out Regards, Shailesh M Karl Ostner <KOSTNER@de.ibm.c To: "Shailesh.Mo...." <Shailesh.More@ril.com> om> cc: Subject: Re: Unable to initiliaze informix instance [2969] 05/17/2004 05:55 Importance: Normal Sender's OU: Reliance |------------------| PM | [ ] Confidential | |------------------| Shailesh, as user informix, can you write to /dev/online_root via dd command ? E.g. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/online_root bs=2k count=20000 regards, Karl -- Karl Ostner IBM Informix Development Munich Data Management Solutions e-mail: kostner@de.ibm.com
The name /dev/online_root is a dummy copied from the onconfig.std file. You need to set it to point to the device or file that you are going to use to store your instance's most critical information. Your error says 'no such device or address' - go fix. Usually, you decide on your disk layout ahead of time. Usually, you want to use raw devices rather than cooked. And you definitely want to use symbolic links to the actual devices. I'd recommend some system for this - along the lines of: /ix-dev/servername/rootdbs.c0 -- rootdbs primary chunk 0 for 'servername'. /ix-dev/servername/rootdbs.m0 -- rootdbs mirror chunk 0 You'd have to create that /ix-dev directory (I personally use /usr/informix/dev for the job, and filenames such as servername.rootdbs.c0 rather than an extra sub-directory, but my setup is not standard - and /usr/informix is not a working INFORMIXDIR). This scheme divorces your device names from the server version and allows you to upgrade over time -- that's an advantage, believe me! -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@us.ibm.com) STSM, Informix Database Engineering, IBM Data Management 4100 Bohannon Drive, Menlo Park, CA 94025 Tel: +1 650-926-6921 Tie-Line: 630-6921 "I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it!" forum.subscriber@iiug.org wrote on 05/17/2004 06:01:14 AM: > > > > > > Karl, > > I got following error while writing into online_root. Shailesh,
Please, change permissions of Your root chunk to 660:
chmod 660 /dev/rdsk/c110t0d0se
The same rule should apply to all raw devices designated to Informix

I have found the problem. It was with the slice, which my system admin has configured it for informix chunks were not properly configured. thanks for ur help, advice and suggestions.
