Can not install IDS 11.50 on openSolaris platform
Posted in 2010
A user trying to install the IDS 11.50 demo on OpenSolaris in a VM hit an installer check failing on a missing libcmd.so.1, even though the file existed in /usr/lib. Bypassing the checks with "ids_install -gui -disable-checks" let the install finish, but oninit then failed with "cannot execute binary file". Art Kagel mentioned LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but Marco Greco and Jonathan Leffler pointed to the likely real cause: the wrong platform build (SPARC binaries on an x86 box, or vice versa), suggesting "file $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit" to check. The poster never confirmed, so no resolution is recorded.

Hi All, I've installed the OpenSolaris OS in Virtual Machine (VM) and tried to install a demo version of IBMs Informix 11.50. Unfortunately the setup script of IDS says that it cannot proceed because of missing library - which is libcmd.so.1. But I can see this file at /usr/lib path in OpenSolaris VM. I have no idea why the installer is not getting the libcmd.so.1 library. It would be great if anybody helps me to resolve this issue. Regards --Rabin
Hi All,
To resolve this issue I tried to run install script as the following command:
"ids_install -gui -disable-checks".
In this way I can avoid the library (libcmd.so.1) missing error and it
installed the server. Then I tried to run server instance using the command
"oninit -iwy". I am running this command as 'root' user. It is giving the
following error:
bash: /opt/IBM/informix/bin/oninit: can not execute binary file.
Do you have any idea how to resolve this issue?
With regards,
--Rabin.

I bet if you do a file $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit, you'll find it's a sparc
binary. Are you sure you are installing the product for the correct platform?

Run: file /opt/IBM/informix/bin/oninit
To determine if you have installed the correct platform version of IDS.

You don't normally need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to find the main system C
library.
Further, setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH does not work for SUID executables such as
oninit. That's the main reason why oninit and the other executables are so
big; they are statically linked.
Since there was also a problem executing oninit, I think the actual problem
was a SPARC executable on an Intel box or vice versa.
