PERFORM 4.1: Creating a table lookup field

Has anyone out there tried to enforce non-dupicate keys within a data entry form. The table that this form references does not have non-duplicates key because the data is loaded with the key as null. Users enter in the key as needed. So, I need the PERFORM screen to lookup the tables that it reference and allow the update of the key field only when that value does not exist in the table. Any suggestions?
