How much data to what medium? Managing archives is all well and good, but is not going to buy you a performance improvement unless you change the bottleneck. This bottleneck is MOST LIKELY to be the tape drive. If you were to add a tape device filter (/dev/rmt...) which uses a compression algorithm, for example, then you would see a performance improvement. An archive management package is not likely to address this. Alternatively you can archive to a disk and then back it off the disk at your leisure. This would require enough disk to archive your data though. An archive management package may use this method, but there is nothing here that you can't do yourself with a few minutes or hours of redirection. j. _____________________________________________________________________________ Jack Parker | Hewlett Packard, BSMC Boise, Idaho, USA| He who talks most, talks least. jparker@hpbs3645.boi.hp.com | _____________________________________________________________________________ Any opinions expressed herein are my own and not those of my employers. _____________________________________________________________________________
