One must also consider the problems of security. Instead of a nice safe client -> App Server -> RDBMS with a couple of firewalls thrown in, you have client -> RDBMS which is not a good thing when considering the internet. This is why I am cautious on using my credit card over the net. Intranet apps which are behind a firewall may not require the security hence the JDBC may be a good thing.
