tbtape question
Posted in 1994
Particulars: Pyramid MIS-4S DC/OSx 92c034 (SVR4) OnLine 4.1 I currently only have a rootdbs set-up, covering approximately 1G of space. At present there's maybe 4 databases in this rootdbs that are perhaps consuming 10M or less of space. If it makes any difference, the rootdbs is set-up on a striped partition using DC/OSx's virtual disk facilities. My question: When I use tbtape to back-up the rootdbs it takes about 15 to 20 minutes. I always choose the option to do a level 0 archive. When tbtape runs, it will initially access the tape drive for about a minute, and then it will sit there idle for the rest of 15-20 minutes. During the rest of this time tbtape is apparently reading the rest of the 1G rootdbs space. I know it is tbtape doing this because the machine is in single-user mode (nothing else is running) and the hard drive lights remain illuminated. In all cases tbtape does run to completion successfully. My question is why the hell does it take this long to back-up 10M of stuff? What exactly is tbtape doing? -- +--------------------+-------------------------------------------------------+ | Michael Faurot | Domain: mfaurot@phzzzt.UUCP | | ------- ------ | OR: phzzzt!mfaurot%bogart@mimsy.umd.edu | +--------------------+--------------------+----------------------------------+
