Re: Experience with New Era

We are developing a large scale New Era application talking to an Informix Online engine (and hopefully Sybase). I agree with the view that New Era is a good product but that the supporting tools could be better. I have used SQLWindows and to a certain extent Powerbuilder before and prefer New Era. The underlying language is better in New Era but due to the tools supplied the environment is not as productive yet as the competition. New Era sits uneasily with MSDOS and complains in an unfriendly way about memory. This does seem to be caused by application programming errors, but does not inspire confidence with the developers. The result tends to be that it takes a long time to develop your first application, maybe 6 months before confidence and productivity increase. We are generally pleased that we have chosen New Era but would strongly urge that you use some people with experience in your development team. There can be a tendency for people trying to learn the product to rubbish it, so you need people who are confident with what it can achieve.
