Command for a compressed ontape to filesystem

Hello,
I am using IDS11.10 on Solaris 10.
Please let me know the command for a compressed ontape to filesystem .
Thanking you in advance.

If you set TAPDEV to STDIO ( I think ) then this will work.
ontape -s -L 0 | gzip > bck1.gz
There is a command line option to send the output to stdout without
modifying TAPEDEV, at the moment I can't think of it. Check the Backup and
Restore manual. From the other recent post it is probably "-t STDIO".
Restore is the opposite:
gunzip -c bck1.gz | ontape -p
You would also want to ensure that your TAPESIZE is large enough to support
the full backup. Not sure if it would prompt you to change tapes when it
hit that point - all of this is something that's on my list to explore, but
I haven't delved far enough yet.

Hi,
In IDS 11, you can set a filter in onconfig. Ontape will honour this one
(just execute ontape -s -L 0)
TAPEDEV /<some_path_for_backup>/ # Tape device path
BACKUP_FILTER /bin/gzip
RESTORE_FILTER /bin/gzip -d -c
TAPEBLK 32 # Tape block size (Kbytes)
TAPESIZE 1024000000

This works really well, but there is a PMR under Linux whereby archecker
cannot read the compressed archive. So if you intend to use archecker then
you are better off gzip'ing the backup afterwards

If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.

Hi,
The answer is not a single command. See chapter 13 of the IBM Informix
Backup and Restore Guide. YOu can get that manual at
http://www.elink.ibmlink.ibm.com/publications/servlet/pbi.wss?CTY=US&FNC=SRX&PBL
=G229-6361-00
. The technique is to set the TAPEDEV, BACKUP_FILTER and RESTORE_FILTER
and parameters in the onconfig file to the location for the archive and
whatever compression/decompression program you choose. /bin/compress and
/bin/uncompress are examples, but you may prefer gzip or something else.
TAPEDEV may be set to the path of whatever directory should hold the
backup file. With those paramters set, just to the regular ontape -s -L
0.
