Have heard zero info on it. Why > the secrecy...as compared to blowout with Illustra? Who knows? Thoughts? Stanford Technology Group (STG) was purchased by Informix about a month before the acquisition of Illustra late last year. Unfortunately, it appears the marketing surrounding the purchase of Illustra overshadowed that of STG. Informix is focused on providing superior solutions for Data Warehousing. This is illustrated by Informix's recently announced the creation of several new organizational structures, one being the Data Warehouse business unit. The Data Warehouse business unit was created to allow Informix to continue innovating and marketing the industry-leading database technology, while dedicating resources in this high growth market. Kirill Scheynkman, the former president of STG, was chosen to lead this business unit. >Nils.Myklebust@ccmail.telemax.no wrote: >There was a post here in c.d.i. some time ago that Informix was planning to >integrate part of MetaCube in Universal Server (in the form of a datablade >I think). MetaCube consists of several major components, the most important of which is the MetaCube Engine itself, which is a (relational) OLAP server. Our intention is to integrate the MetaCube server technology with the Informix server technology, leveraging the Informix Universal Server extensible framework (from Illustra). When this is accomplished, Informix will provide the first fully integrated relational database with built-in multidimensional analysis capabilities. By integrating the OLAP functionality with the core RDBMS functionality we will be able to achieve performance figures on many types of queries that will be impossible to match with tools that simply query generic RDBMS systems with nothing but ANSI-standard SQL; the problem being that ANSI SQL is simply not designed to do many OLAP type queries (such as comparisons, rankings, time-series), and when you do this externally from the database you will have more network traffic, not to mention duplicative scans of the data to achieve the results you need. If anyone has any questions or needs additional information about MetaCube, please give me a call or contact your Informix sales representative. Thanks, Gary McCracken Informix Software, Inc.
