I agree with Dave, why worry about updating a column with the same value? As far as informix goes I would bet that it is faster to just do the update than to worry about checking the value first and then allowing the update. You need to forget all the inadequacies of Oracle (performance) when it comes to dealing with informix. Sure, it has its faults, but speed is not one of them.
