You are correct. The concept of OnLine archiving is to back-up and
restore the whole online system. It never was, nor ever could be used
for table or database back up purposes. I come from the old school who
believe that prior to installing any new component that you should take a
backup of any data that could get corrupted. I always do that using
dbexport and dbimport for restoration.
You should also be aware that if you ever want to reconfigure your OnLine
system, or move between hardware platforms or Operating systems(possibly
including versions) you should do a dbexport of the data as online
archiving/restore will not always work over changes of this nature.
