Re: Problem with informix 5.0 on Unix Data General DGUX

Pretty much OL5 administration is the same as IDS7 except all the utilities
start with 'tb' instead of 'on' so 'tbinit -i' will wipe the instance and start
from scratch. However, before you do that you might contact tech support to
mark the chunk online. Assuming the drive itself was not destroyed you will be
able to unload any data not damaged by the crash before reinitializing the
instance. Then you can reload it and only have to recover anything that's
missing. Often in a system crash a chunk is marked down due to a power or
controller failure but the physical chunk and all of its data are fine. So:
Step 1: Get tech support to mark the chunk up (tell them you have a down system,
down system support does not normally require a support contract).
Step 2: Tbcheck the server to see if there is in fact any damage. If only
indexes are damaged rebuild them.
Step 3: scan through the database looking for missing information that might not
be detected as damage by the onchecks (like that transaction you know completed
just before the system crashed).
If all is well at this point you're client is back in business. Otherwise,
dbexport or manually export as much data as possible (if the exports fail try
dropping all indexes and export again you may get more data if there was index
damage). Once you have exported as much as possible you can reinitialize,
rebuild the instance recreate the database schema and reload the data you were
able to save.
