ONTAPE vs ONBAR - copying a single DBSPACE
Posted in 2004
A user on IDS 7.23 (HP-UX) wanted to back up a single dbspace to tape, but ontape can't do dbspace-level archives and he had no third-party storage manager for onbar. Replies suggested unloading the tables in that dbspace to flat files and writing them to tape with tar/cpio, or shutting down the instance and dd-ing the chunks. Art Kagel advised upgrading to 7.31 or 9.40, which bundle a storage manager for onbar; 9.40 also adds onmode -c block for external archives. Later posts question whether a third-party manager is really required for onbar, and that question goes unanswered.

Bottom Line: I want to copy a single DBSPACE to tape. I don't have a third party data manager so I can't use ONBAR. ONTAPE doesn't support archiving a single DBSPACE to tape. Any ideas? INFORMIX-OnLine Version 7.23.UC11 HPUX B.11.00 HP9000/L2000 Rob
Unload the tables within the space to flat files and back them up to tape using cpio or tar. Take care. First, it's WAY past time to upgrade to 7.31 or even 9.40 (both of which come
with a storage manager for onbar BTW). The release you have is probably not
even Y2K compliant! IDS 7.23 had many problems fixed in later releases and
there have been 5 speed improvements between 7.23 and 9.40.
Having said that, and given the release you have, there's nothing you can do
unless you can shutdown the instance while the dbspace chunks are being dd
copied to backup tape. IDS 9.40 has an external archive mode (onmode -c block)
which blocks updates to the server and performs a checkpoint so that dbspace
chunks can be copied to archives external to the database. &.2x doesnot support
this mode.
And as noted 7.31 or 9.40 would let you use onbar with the delivered storage
manager.

Rob- If you're using Unix or Linux, you could stop the instance and dd each of the chunks to tape. --EEM > -----Original Message----- > From: Konikoff, R.... didn't think a 3rd party data manager was required for use with onbar.
Shouldn't you be able to do everything from the command line?
