Parallel index build....(how much tempspace)
Posted in 2005
Hi,
Responses from this group of wise folks is generally faster than RTFM :)
Having said that, ... I submit my issue...
I have IDS 9.40.FC3XD, on solaris 9.
System Configuration: Sun Microsystems sun4u Sun Fire 880
System clock frequency: 150 MHz
Memory size: 16384 Megabytes
======= CPUs ============================
Run E$ CPU CPU
Brd CPU MHz MB Impl. Mask

B 1 1200 8.0 US-III+ 11.1
A 2 1200 8.0 US-III+ 11.1
B 3 1200 8.0 US-III+ 11.1
C 4 1200 8.0 US-III+ 11.1
D 5 1200 8.0 US-III+ 11.1

I have 4 temp dbspaces at 2 GB each. They are all listed in my
$ONCONFIG for DBSPACETEMP.
We have SAP. We are upgrading from SAP R/3 to SAP Enterprise.
I have a table (ZZTL01A) round-robin frag'd into 6 dbspaces of 12 GB
each. These are accompanied by 2 index dbspaces, one of 16 GB, and one
of 12 GB.
During the SAP upgrade, it rebuilds an index on the large table. During
the index rebuild, IDS gives 6 of these messages:
01:40:26 WARNING: Not enough temp space for parallel index build. Space required = 6188720 pages; space available = 4168592
pages.
Partial index build started.
Since I am getting 6 messages, I assume I have one index sort/build
thread active per dbspace the table is in (6 frags).
To help the engine process this faster,
1) Is my best bet to grow the 4 temp dbspaces and leave it at that?
2) Or grow the 4 tempdbspaces plus add 2 more (such that I have 6 temp
dbspaces...one for each sort thread)?
3) Or leave the 4 temp dbspaces alone, but add a 5th, very large one?
I have seen option 3 be helpful when I was in a "hurry up and do
something" mode, but now that there is time to figure this out... I am
leaning toward option 2.
What do ya'll think?
Thanks for the input,
Norma Jean
