Hi, Bigpages or the newer technoloy Hugetlb reduces the number of TLB ( translation lookaside buffer ) misses in Linux and hence increases performance by a few percent. This is not supported by the current IDS versions and would not help to solve your issue. To really utilize the large memory of your machine we have 64 bit port available. The availability of 64-bit computing platforms presents new possibilities for increased performance of database servers, as well as database applications. 32-bit platforms have an inherent address-space limitation of 4 gigabytes (GB). Removal of this 4 GB limit on the address space of database servers allows for the creation of larger buffer pools, sort heaps, package caches, and other resources that can consume large amounts of memory. A 64-bit environment and the ability to address more than 4 GB of memory can greatly enhance the scalability and performance of databases. With IDS Version 10.0, we have optimized native 64-bit editions for all major Linux platforms. The Linux platforms supported by the new IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 10.0 64 BIT VERSION are: Intel EM64T (X86-64), AMD64 (64-bit edition for AMD Opteron- and Athlon64-based systems), POWERB. (IBM eServerb", iSeriesb", and pSeriesB. systems) , zSeriesB. (IBM eServer zSeriesB. systems) , IA64 (64-bit edition for Intel Itanium-based systems) Thanks Sandor IBM Informix Development Munich shaun.patrick.wal lace@gmail.com Sent by: To owner-informix-li informix-list@iiug.org st@iiug.org cc Subject 07.09.2005 14:03 Re: Assistance with getting DB memory usage over 2 gigs Please respond to shaun.patrick.wal lace I'm going to be trying changing the base address like the note said but I've seen Oracle sites say something about setting up "bigpages" to get around the 3 gig user space issue. Is this something informix can use? I.E. if I set bigpages=4100MB then would Informix be able to use this for the database? Let me know if I am off the mark here. sending to informix-list
It looks like I'll need to address the issue using 64 bit CPU's / OS and database. Thanks everyone for your help.
