Of course, treating columns in a position-dependent way is totally wrong, but then again, 4GL ain't that smart sometimes, and besides, it sure is nice to look at groups of cooperating columns in approximately the same place when you are reading a schema, so I too like to insert columns in exactly the right place.

When I first started porogramming, on Fortran in 1978 for the UK Ministry of Defence, the mad professor-type who "taught" be used never to pay much attention to coherent naming and commenting. His classic was to denote the number of a column on a grid as "rowno". I tut-tuttedat the time but eventually developed a lucrative 13 year contracting career based on making myself indispensible on the sturdy foundations of impenetrable coding and scripting ...:-)
