Installation Sequence
Posted in 2007
A user on HP-UX 11i had already installed IDS 10 plus CSDK and asked whether he must uninstall them before adding 4GL 7.32, given the old "Rules of TEN" (Tools, Engines, Networking) install-order advice. Answers: no uninstall needed; just install 4GL with the engine offline and test, and if libraries/message files misbehave, simply reinstall CSDK and IDS afterwards. 4GL can share the same INFORMIXDIR as CSDK since its ESQL/C files are named differently, though some prefer separate directories (required for 64-bit IDS with 32-bit tools) with a single shared sqlhosts via symlinks. Existing databases are unaffected if the instance is offline; back up onconfig and sqlhosts first.

Hi all, I installed IDS 10 in HPUX 11i. After installed, 4GL is needed to run the application. Then, I want to install 4GL v7.32 (e.g. runtimes). I found some installation guides and newsgroups mentioned the installation should be in sequence ... and uninstall CSDK. Do I need to uninstall the IDS and/or CSDK ? Many thanks !
You don't have to uninstall, just reinstall the CSDK and IDS after installing the C4GL. FYI, following the sequence of installation, known in the Informix Community as the Rules of TEN (Tools then Engines then Networking) is supposed to be no longer required. So it might be worth a try just installing 4GL with the engine offline and try to bring the engine back online. If that works you are probably fine but test the CSDK also. If engine restart or some application run fails (especially if it fails on some shared library or message file error) then you can reinstall the CSK and the engine. At any rate the order of installing IDS and CSDK is definitely no longer a concern. Art S. Hi, No experience with IDS 10, but up to now with 9.40 I always installed (I just did it yesterday once again)in the following sequence : Cliensdk (esql/c) Esql/cobol SQL 4GL IDS Which works fine. If you need to update SQL or 4Gl, in my opinion you have to reinstall. Many thanks, I am newbie in informix. I found 4GL intallation guide mentioned CSDK bundled in IDS and CSDK bundled in 4GL can be installed in same directory. For my case, I already installed IDS + CSDK. Do I install the 4GL's CSDK in another informix directory or overwrite the IDS' CSDK? For example, existing IDS informix home: /informix Do I install 4GL in /informix or another informix home e.g. /usr/informix? Thanks again!
Hi Lapeire, I already setup a database. If I install the 4GL (bundled CSDK), and/or ESQL, then reinstall IDS, any impact to the existing database? Thanks a lot !
None at all, presuming you take the instance off-line while reinstalling. Oh and make a copy of your onconfig and sqlhosts files just in case. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Praise the Lord oh my soul, let my inmost being praise His holy name. -Psalm 103:1 ----- Original Message ---- From: ISA I <isa7asi@hotmail.com> To: ids@iiug.org Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2007 9:18:19 AM Subject: RE: Installation Sequence [10380] Hi Lapeire, I already setup a database. You can install in the same directory. The ESQL/C pre-compiler message files and libraries in C4GL are all named differently than their CSDK equivalents so no clashes. Art S. Hi, you CAN install into the same directory, but I prefer to install different products into different directories - at least to separate IDS and tools/SDKs. If you want to use 64bit IDS with 32bit developing tools you MUST do it that way. Only disadvantage: You have to set INFORMIXDIR to different values when developing/using client applications and administering IDS. You avoid all order issues and you can easily switch between different versions for the different products. I would suggest to have only ONE sqlhosts file (in the IDS directory?) and pointing to it with symbolic links from the 4GL,SDK directories.
