It needs to be stressed that the goal of performance tweaking is to eliminate the bottlenecks. Since the disk i/o is a main bottleneck, striping is usually a very good solution. Note, though, that if you are suffering from bottlenecks elsewhere, such as poor design, poor SQL, doing work the hard way, or poor indexing, striping is not going to be the panacea you hope it will be. After your application is adequately tuned, and after you are sure that you don't have processing or cpu bottlenecks, the striping can still provide a noticeable benefit. I ran a Pyramid MIS/SERVER with 12 processors with 20 gig striped over about 10 drives. My results were much better than doing the "manual" striping (manually placing tables on optimimum locations) that is sometimes touted as a cure for Informix speed problems. With the striping, I got the performance improvements EVERYWHERE, not just on the manually-placed tables, and also didn't have the hassle of keeping up with where everything was on the disks. With striping, you do it once and forget it.
