You should be able to, although I haven't tried the mix of version 6 tools with version
7 engines. But essentially, the INFORMIXDIR variable points to your tools, and the
SQLEXEC variable points to your engine. Generally, you would only need the tools
location in your PATH variable. However, if you are running something like dbaccess, you
may have a problem.

Alternatively, as Nils said, simply install the version 7 engine in the same directory
as your version 6 engine.
