onsoctcp uses socket connections and your network to communicate with
the users, A network connection is required if your users are clients
in aa true client server setup.
If your users are attached to the host either viaa the net (using
Exceed or Reflection or something) or a serial connection or the like
then you use a local connection method (net connections do work but
they will be slower)
the local connection methods are shared memory (onipcshm) and on some
platforms onipcstr, or streams.
shared memory connections are fast but suffer from a security problem
in that someone could figure out the base address and do damage.
stream connections do not suffer this problem but do suffer from a bug
that leaves files in INFORMIXTMP if an abnormal shutdown occurs,
causing the system to refuse to come back up. This can be worked
around fairly easily.
Hope this helps
