Program finding out what the engine is

I'm looking for a neat way for a program in 4GL (e.g. running on the Unix box) to tell if the database it's connected to is SE or IDS - that could be IDS 7.3, 93. or 9.4. We have a method from ages back to do with what binaries are in $INFORMIXDIR but I don't like that. It could look for a specific system catalogue or column in a system catalogue that is only present in IDS, or.... TIA :) 5 cats
