Restore a Informix 11.50 FC2 backup in 11.70.FC8
Posted in 2016
The poster wanted to refresh a dev server (11.70.FC8) with an ontape backup taken from a 11.50.FC2 production instance, without disturbing 24x7 production. Answers were unanimous: an ontape archive can only be restored into an instance of the same version, so he must install 11.50, do a cold restore (using ontape -r -rename if paths differ; ports/instance names don't matter), then upgrade in place to 11.70 — which conveniently rehearses the planned production upgrade. ER was mentioned as an alternative; watch Developer Edition limits (8GB) and note licences can move to another machine of equal or smaller capacity.

Greetings
I need to copy a database from a production server with 11.50 FC2 to a develop
server with 11.70.FC8- I already have a ontape backup file from the production
server in the develop server.
I had match the dbspaces and chunk structure in both server for all the
instance.
¿ do i have to do an alternate intall to restore ? if so, ¿ what i have to do
a cold restore ? ¿ is there another way to do it ?
I can´t use dbexport, onunload or other toos, because I can´t disturb the
production server who is 24x7x365
I have to have a return plan if some thing is wrong
Thanks in advance
What is the purpose of the copy? Do you want to:
1. Test/verify the archive/restore process and the efficacy of the file?
2. Create a DEV/Test/QA copy of the production server?
3. Restore the database so you can extract some data from a number of
tables?
4. Test your recovery procedures to restore the production archive in
case the production server is destroyed?
5. What?
The best answer will depend on your response.

The number 2. Create a DEV/Test/QA copy of the production server? The develop database have very old data and a new version, 11.7, so I have to download it to 11.5 version and update with recent production data, then upgrade to 11.7 to do a previous environment test, in order to migrate production from 11.5 to 11.7, but somebody migrates develop to 11.7 before that probes.
Short answer would be "no. You cannot restore a backup taken on Vx on an
instance on Vx+y
You'd need to install 11.50.fc2, restore and then upgrade in place.
But why do you want to do it? Are you running DEV in a different version
than PRD? It will get you into troubles:
- A developer may use something only available on 11.7 and send it into
production wher it will not work
- You may test something that works in 11.7 and then hit an 11.50 bug
- The opposite from the previous one
If you're preparing an upgrade, then you should take the opportunity to
simulate the upgrade.
If you're preparing an upgrade why are you using 11.7 instead of 12.10?
Regards.

My email works... but I don't check it frequently...

The problem is: recently, both versions was the same, 11-5, but develop was
migrated to 11.7 to do test and qa to migrate prod to 11.7.
The application user then said the data was very old, so I have to update it,
but the server is now in 11.7 I have to return to 11.5 in order to restore a
backup with ontape archive in 11.5 from prod. Then, with fresh data, upgrade
again to 11.7 to prove the previous environment before do it in prod.
Hello.
A nice alternative would be using ER between them. But an initial sync would
delay your network in production.
You will must install the 11.50, restore backup and then upgrade it, as
mentioned. This will take a little work, but won't impact your production box.
Hope it helps.
Best regards.

So, I have to install the version 11.7 without create a instance, and then
restore with this ontape version as a cold restore ?
I have to have the same port and server in order the application users can log
in
Do I have to change my environment variables ? Any other considerations to do
the task and have a return plan if anything doesn´t go wrong ?
Hi,
it was already said that you cannot restore an ontape backup taken from a
11.50 instance
in a 11.70 instance.
You have to install a developer edition of 11.50 to be able to restore the
production backup
and then migrate the instance to 11.70 (that what you intend to do in prod).
The used ports/names of the instance do not matter, only the path names should
match
or need to be rewritten during restore (ontape -r -rename ...)
Mind the restrictions of the developer edition, there are some limitations.
You might not be able to configure the same memory or CPU usage and also
you are restricted to 8GB storage (afaik).
For testing such a setup you might better use the Innovator edition,
especially if your data amount is > 8GB.
Anyway, the same rules apply here, 11.50 backups can only be restored in a
11.50 instance.

Ok, thanks One more cuestion: My 11.7 installation is about 250Gb, so it means I have a valid licence. How can I pass the licence from 11.7 to 11.5 installation ?
So, depending on the Edition of Informix and your particular license type you are licensed for one of: - A particular number of Processor Value Units (roughly equivalent to # CPUs * a performance metric per CPU) - A number of sockets - A number of named registered users In any case, as long as your "new" machine does not exceed the currently licensed capacity you can migrate the licenses to any system. Does that answer your question? Art Art S.
