Re: DDS-3 tape backup for HP9000

Mike,
We're using the HP Omniback DLT, and went from 4-5 hours to the
internal 4mm DAT to ~30 minutes on the DLT. It is fast enough that
I'm considering dropping the level 1 archives in favour of level 0's
run three times per week. The downside is that I'm not too happy with
a couple of the "features" of the unit WRT the restore options, and
we've found a few bugs in the software. Other than that, we're happy.
Our DB is ~50Gb, and it fits fine on a single tape.
The single most irritating bug, BTW, is the requirement that you roll
forward your logs completely. This is great if you are recovering
from a hardware failure, but eliminates the recovery options from
fat-fingered statements like 'drop ....'. Not that anybody here would
ever do anything like that, of course! (Well, you can bring it back,
but Support has to dial in and fix the dbspace flags.) I bring this
up not to gripe about the product; it works fine. Rather, if somebody
has an alternative I'd like to hear about it.
