The interface provides customers with access to their data on Informix databases including the latest INFORMIX OnLine Dynamic Server, release 7.1 through MAGNA X-generated application services in a three-tier client/server environment. MAGNA X interface to Informix databases is critical in our efforts to provide customers with the most flexible and open computing environment possible, said Cheryl MacDonald, director of software alliances at Informix. INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server is designed to support high volume transaction processing applications. Support of MAGNA X enables a wide choice of applications and development tools. How MAGNA X works MAGNA X generates the server side of applications in three-tier client/server environments while using popular client-based tools, including PowerBuilder and Visual Basic, to build front-end user interfaces. MAGNA X applications can take advantage of widely used transaction processing (TP) monitors such as Transarc's Encina and Novell's Tuxedo. TP monitors manage performance and data integrity, providing the MAGNA X customer with a substantially more efficient and flexible environment. Why is Magna supporting INFORMIX access? Informix was the first database vendor to recognize the value of transaction processing (TP) monitors in high-volume data processing situations. By building a compliance into its products, Informix enables a TP monitor to manage a global transaction -- transactions which typically involve multiple physically distributed databases. Informix's INFORMIX-New Era also supports Encina. Three-tier client/server defined The three-tier architecture partitions applications between: (1) PC or workstation clients; (2) application servers handling the systemUs business logic; and (3) database servers and legacy systems. In this context, some form of middleware manages the flow of data between the three-tiers. At the high end, a TP monitor manages performance and data integrity to provide a substantially more efficient and flexible environment.
