It's more expensive. The high level of indirection between the logical Informix chunk/Oracle tablespace etc and the actual physical (hyper)volume upon which that disk area will reside means that traditional disk placement techniques cannot easily be carried out. On the other hand, such is the peformance, particularly with fibre connectivity, large caches etc, that it's not necessary. > Which database > server/ product is best suited for such kind of job ? If sufficient money is spent on the SAN infrastructure, excellent backup and recovery times can be using external restores. There a couple of white papers on database and SAN, and SAN and backup and recovery, on our website at www.ardenta.com (you'll have to register). For more general papers have a search of EMC's site www.emc.com: down the years they've produced papers on intergartion with most of the major DBMSs, and many of the principles are applicable to other SAN vendors.
