I support the various replys sayin 'load then index' for the reasons mentioned plus another. If the data you are loading is duff (e.g. duplicates where there shouldn't be) and the indexes are in place first, no data gets loaded. If creating them afterwards you can then create the same index without the 'UNIQUE' bit and use it to help speed up finding the culprite row(s).
